Statement by Sue Riseling, Chair of Police Leaders for Community Safety
“Police Leaders for Community Safety applauds today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding the federal prohibition on gun possession by domestic abusers. Domestic violence laws disarming domestic abusers have saved lives and will continue to do so as a result of this ruling.
“This decision means we can continue to keep guns away from domestic abusers, who pose an even greater danger to their victims when armed with firearms. Victims of domestic violence are five times more likely to be killed if the abuser has access to a gun.
“The presence of firearms in domestic abuse situations dramatically increases the likelihood of deadly outcomes for victims of domestic abuse and for law enforcement. Responding to domestic violence calls are among the most dangerous situations officers face, and the presence of firearms escalates the risk.
“We can all sleep better tonight knowing the Supreme Court left these vital public safety laws intact.”
Police Leaders for Community Safety is a nonpartisan national advocacy organization (501(c)4) established by prominent law enforcement leaders to promote policies and public investments that make our communities safer, improve the policing profession, protect public processes, and preserve human dignity.
