FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 26, 2024
Statement of Rick Myers, Vice Chair of Police Leaders for Community Safety:
“Police Leaders for Community Safety, a nonpartisan organization of law enforcement leaders from across the nation, applauds the Biden-Harris Administration’s newly announced Executive Orders aimed at reducing gun violence and saving lives. These Executive Orders are important and impactful steps that will help combat the scourge of gun violence in our communities.
“We strongly support the promotion of safe gun storage, red flag laws and other measures that will improve the background check system. These preventive actions are crucial in ensuring that firearms are kept out of dangerous hands. The Administration’s investment in community violence interventions is also vital as it addresses the need for collaboration between law enforcement, community organizations, and public health entities to tackle gun violence from multiple angles.
“Police Leaders for Community Safety appreciates the focus on improving school-based active shooter drills, and ensuring schools have access to research-driven strategies that protect students without causing unnecessary trauma. Enhancing school safety through effective preparation and responsible gun storage measures is vital for safeguarding our children and preventing future tragedies.
“Law enforcement leaders also strongly support these actions to address the emerging threats of machinegun conversion devices and unserialized, 3D-printed firearms, both of which have been increasingly linked to violent crime and pose grave threats to public safety.
“These important Executive Orders align with our mission of making communities safer and addressing gun violence is fundamental in achieving that goal. Gun violence is not a partisan issue; it is a public safety crisis that affects all Americans. We call on Congress to build on these efforts by passing bipartisan, common-sense gun safety legislation.”
